You’ve likely seen the pictures of this giant, old arena, but it’s hard to know what you see inside the Colesseum in Rome. First off, just walking into it is like having this strange cathartic experience. I don’t know exactly one word to describe it, it’s a bunch of words. You can feel what it might have felt like 2000 years ago to be sitting there in the Colesseum waiting for a gladiator to fight a tiger or bear or just about anything they could’ve thrown at the man (it was most always men that were gladiators.).
There are several levels and there are different tickets for the levels you’re going to see. Since prices change all the time, I’m not going to list them, but you can go to the Colesseum website to view them. Here’s a snapshot of the different parts of the Colesseum that you can see.
The Grand Amphitheater
As you approach the Colosseum, get ready to be awestruck by its immense size and breathtaking architecture. Picture the colossal structure, built with majestic columns and arches, proudly standing as a symbol of Rome’s power. Step inside, and you’ll feel a sense of wonder as you imagine the thousands of spectators who once filled these seats, cheering on their favorite gladiators and witnessing exhilarating events.
The Arena
Now, let’s venture onto the arena floor, where the real action took place. Stand on the same ground where fearless gladiators engaged in intense battles, captivating the crowd with their skills. Close your eyes and envision the atmosphere charged with excitement as you walk in the footsteps of ancient warriors. This was the epicenter of the Colosseum’s dramas, where legends were made.
The Underground Hypogeum
I have to say going underneath the Colesseum was quite a trip. The video above was from that trip. Beneath the arena lies a hidden world called the hypogeum, a web of tunnels and chambers that served as the backstage for the grand spectacles. Explore this secret underworld, where gladiators prepared themselves for their moment of glory, and wild animals awaited their entrance onto the stage. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the intricate workings of the ancient games.
The Seating Area
Now, let’s climb the steps to the seating area and take in the view that once enthralled the Roman audience. Imagine the vibrant atmosphere as the spectators filled the tiers, eagerly anticipating the spectacles that were about to unfold before their eyes. Marvel at the clever design of the amphitheater, ensuring that everyone had a good seat and an unforgettable experience.
Archways and Passageways
As you wander through the Colosseum, don’t miss the intricate archways and passageways that line its perimeter. These impressive structures served as gateways for the crowds, allowing them to flow in and out smoothly. Imagine the buzz and anticipation that filled these corridors as people eagerly made their way to witness the grand events that unfolded within these walls.
The Colosseum Museum
Adjacent to the Colosseum, you’ll find a captivating museum that further enriches your experience. Here, you can explore a treasure trove of ancient artifacts, sculptures, and enlightening exhibits. Marvel at the intricate reconstructions that bring the past to life, providing fascinating insights into the lives of gladiators and the cultural significance of the games. It’s a chance to deepen your understanding of this incredible monument.
The Colesseum in Rome Wrap Up
If you’ve made it all the way to Rome and to the Colesseum, I highly recommend visiting the underground. It costs a little bit more than just visiting aboveground, but the adventure is totally worth it. You get to see/experience where gladiators and animals would all have been waiting before they were pulleyed up to fight on the Colesseum floor.
